Yesterday I decided to go to a hip hop dance class. On the website the class said it was beginner to advanced level. "Great! All levels! I'll be fine!" Now, I'd like to think I'm a fairly decent dancer. I've done a few salsa choreos. I've taken 1 or 2 hip hop classes before. I can keep a beat. I can hit a few body rolls, do a single pop and lock, add a twerk or two. I figured it would be hard, but not too bad. I walked in and there were like 20 girls looking like the stepped out of an episode of So You Think You Can Dance. They were stretching and all of a sudden two of them dropped into a split! Like a SYNCHRONIZED SPLIT! My mouth dropped. It was at that moment that I realized that they were on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance and I was on Girl, You Thought You Could Dance. These ladies (and a few men) were EXPERTS! I was just there for the experience. So I walk in and we start warming up with stretches and light aerobics. After a few side crunches, my abs were burning; which was embarrassing because why the heck am I so out of shape?!? That's another story. Anyway, the instructor was Shirlene Quigley. Look her up! She's amazing! The first thing she did was make us get in a circle and she offered us some encouragement. She reassured us that this was just a class, not an audition; and that we were there to have fun! In my head I was like "YES! SAY THAT! TELL THESE GIRLS THAT THIS IS JUST FOR FUN!" Only because they were super good and I was super not, and I was super jealous :). The class began and it was difficult, not impossible, but difficult. I was behind a count much of the choreo, but that's only because when it got to a part that I knew, I would KILL it! But then I would get so happy that I missed the next count lol. Overall it was so much fun. I said to myself, "Look at you being fearless! You looked a mess, but girl you were FEARLESS!" I'm sure there will be more episodes of Girl, You Thought You Could Dance. Stay Tuned.
